Pay by Stage

What Family Mediation Costs in Victoria, BC

Separation is uncertain enough without an open-ended legal bill. Our pricing works in clear stages, and you only ever pay for the stage you are in. Flat, per-person prices at every step, so what you see is what you get.

Why Stages

Commit to the next step, not the whole journey

Some people complete a pre-mediation meeting and decide mediation is not the right path. With stage pricing, they have spent a few hundred dollars finding that out, not thousands. Each stage is priced on its own, invoiced on its own, and finished before the next begins.

Three Levels of Support

Pricing by path and by stage

All prices are per person, plus applicable tax. Whichever path you choose, your Separation Agreement is drafted by Rebecca Alleyne, senior family lawyer, at the same drafting rate.

What does the complete journey cost?

Most families want to see the whole picture, so here it is. The complete journey, from first meeting to a signed-ready Separation Agreement:

PathParenting or financial onlyParenting & financial
Mediation with Isabella$1,400 / person$1,950 / person
Mediation with Rebecca$2,200 / person$3,000 / person

Prices are per person plus applicable tax, paid stage by stage, never all at once. For comparison, two lawyers negotiating the same separation commonly costs $5,000 to $20,000+ per person.

A note on tax: mediation services and document drafting are taxed differently in BC, which is why the mediation and drafting stages are invoiced separately.

What Your Mediation Fee Includes

Everything you need to arrive prepared and leave decided

Guided preparation

All communications with our office, a guided step-by-step preparation process, direction in gathering and organizing your documents, and recommendations for other professionals to consult where helpful.

A secure shared workspace

A secure document drive for sharing files with our office and your spouse throughout the process, and continued access afterward so your own lawyer can review everything before you sign.

The session itself

A half-day session (up to four hours) for parenting or financial matters, or a full day (up to seven hours) for both, with legal information provided throughout so decisions are grounded in BC family law. Full days can be split into multiple sessions.

Calculations, done with you

Child support, spousal support, and property distribution calculations prepared and worked through on screen, with guidance on how they apply to your circumstances.

Should you need more time, additional sessions can be arranged. About 80 percent of our clients do not need additional hours.

Your Agreement, Delivered

A document built to be reviewed and signed

Your Separation Agreement is drafted in common, easy-to-understand language, written neutrally so the wording favours neither of you. You receive it in Microsoft Word format so agreed changes are easy to make, along with every schedule, calculation, and spreadsheet from your mediation. Independent legal advice from your own lawyer is encouraged before signing, and because the decisions are already made, that review is typically brief.

Additional Services

Annual support recalculation

This is for people who already have an agreement. Support is based on income, and incomes change, so many families come back once a year to put the numbers right. You exchange updated financial information, we rerun the calculations, and your support agreement is updated to match. Up to three hours, $1,000 per person plus tax.

Doing this yearly is far cheaper than letting an arrangement drift out of date, which is how arrears build up and how disagreements start.
